National Championships 2013

17th to 22nd November

WELCOME TO THE 2013 AVGU NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE NATIONAL CAPITAL

It is appropriate that the AVGU National Championships be held in the National Capital in the same year that we celebrate the Centenary of Canberra. There will be a lot going on. November is an ideal time of the year to visit Canberra and region, with mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine.

Visitors are often surprised at the number of hidden treasures our ‘bush capital’ has to offer. ‘There is no place like the Australian War Memorial’. National institutions, such as the Museum and Art Gallery are sure to have attractive exhibitions on show, while for those who prefer the outdoors there is the Arboretum, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, a cruise on the lake or even a trip to the reputable Murrumbateman wineries. Canberra also offers an entertaining choice of live theatre and musical performances.

We have selected three of the most attractive and challenging championship courses for your golfing pleasure:

Gungahlin Lakes: excellent fairways and with water on 14 holes, good course management is essential.

Gold Creek: skilfully designed by Bruce Devlin with a reputation for fast greens.

Yowani: a long course with tree-lined fairways and large greens places a premium on accuracy.

Australian Veteran Golfer's Union Regis 2012 National Championships

The following is a copy of a report on the national championships taken from the website of the Mornington Penninsula Veteran Golfers Association Inc www.mpvetsgolf.com.au.

"The championships began on Sunday 11th November when some 533 people registered at Rosebud Country Club, collected their welcome bags and on a beautiful sunny day got their first taste of the Mornington Peninsula. Monday was the first day of competition when a fourball stableford was conducted at Rosebud Country Club when we had the use of the two courses and put through 402 players – a huge day. The 54 hole Championship was held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with one grade per day on each of the Ocean Course at The National, The Dunes and the Legends course at Moonah Links. Competitors were very complimentary about the quality and conditioning of the courses and also greatly appreciated the excellent service given at each club. There were visitors from each State and Territory with the biggest contributors being W.A. with 108, N.S.W. with 124 and Queensland 149.

The Presentation Dinner was held at Mornington Racing Club with 470 in attendance. The room was beautifully themed, the food of excellent quality and the music first class from the Baker Boys Band. Presentations were made to the major winners who are listed below."
